The Intriguing Hidden Truth about Misdirection & The Genuine Power of Attention

In theatrical magic, misdirection can be described as a method of deceit that is able to draw attention of the audience to one thing to distract it from the other. Controlling attention of the audience is the goal of every theater, and the foremost requirement of all magic acts. If the magic is of the “pocket trick” variety or an extensive stage production misdirection is the main secret. The term refers to either the effect (the eye`s attention being drawn to an unimportant object) or the sleight-of-hands or patter (the magician`s speech) that causes the illusion.

It`s difficult to determine who first coined the term, but the first reference to misdirection can be found in the writing of a renowned writer and magician, Nevil Maskelyne: Admittedly, it consists of misleading the spectator`s senses, to hide from being aware of certain information that require secrecy. At the same time, magician and artist Harlan Tarbell noted, Nearly all the art of sleight-of-hand depends on this art of misdirection.

Magicians who have studied and developed techniques for misdirection include Max Malini, Shin Lim, Tamariz, Tony Slydini, Tommy Wonder along with Dai Vernon.

Henry Hay describes the central conjuring process as a manipulating interest.

A few magicians misdirect audience attention in two primary ways. One leads the audience to look away for a fleeting time, so that they aren`t aware of a sleight or move. Another approach alters the viewers` perceptions, leading them into thinking that something else can be a factor in the accomplishment of the feat but it actually does not have any bearing on the effect at all. Fitzkee notes that The most effective magic is in the skill of his performance in changing the spectators mind. Additionally, sometimes a prop like a magic wand aids in confusion.

Unless the magician use

Misdirection makes use of the limitations of human brains to present a false image and memory. The brain of an average spectator can only focus on one thing at the time. The magician uses this to manipulate the viewers` thoughts or perceptions of sensory input which leads them to incorrect conclusions.

Magicians have debated over the usage of the term, “misdirection,” causing plenty of debate about what it is and how it functions.

Master illusionist Jon Finch

drew a distinction between misdirection and direction. One is a negative word, and the other positive. In the end, he sees the two as the same thing. If a performer some method, has influenced the mind of his viewers to believe that he did something which he has not done, he has wrongly led them to believe this; hence, misdirection.

Tommy Wonder has pointed that it`s more efficient, from a magician`s point of view to focus on the purpose of directing the attention of the audience. He writes that misdirection suggests the wrong direction. It suggests that attention is diverted away towards something. By constantly using this term the idea eventually becomes ingrained in our minds that we may begin to perceive misdirection as directing our attention away from rather than towards something.

Slydini explained that if the magician believe it, the audience will believe in it, and the magic they can`t observe. It is true that people believe what the magician does and follow the magician. read more info here
