The World May Run Out of Food Pretty Soon…But Why

Multiple studies show that the world may face a food shortage by 2030 or 2050. This is why a lot of experts have been encouraging people to eat more sustainably either through grocery shopping or going through similar online grocery services such as online grocery in Hong Kong. This provides them with a different option to prepare their own food or choose healthier ingredients in their food.

Switching to a healthier diet that is also beneficial to the environment is only a small fraction of solution for a possibility of a food shortage. But why is there even a possibility of food running out in the first place?

Earth May Reach Its Limit to Feed Humanity

According to researchers, by the year 2050, the world’s population would be too big to the point where it would be impossible to feed. There is a limit to everything, and according to sociobiologist Edward Wilson this includes Earth’s capacity to feed humanity is limited. The demand for food may have increased at least 70% compared to what humanity needed back in 2017. Interestingly, the same study also showed that even if the world’s population switched to vegetarian diets, the earth’s farmlands still wouldn’t be able to feed 10 billion people.

Meat Production is Not Sustainable

Scientists have also stated that meat as a main food source is not efficient. This is mainly because it takes 75 times more energy to produce livestock than it is to produce grains and corn. Experts also stated that beef alone takes 54 calories of fuel alone to produce one protein, and at least 2 to 3 calories of fuel to produce on protein from wheat. These numbers have led experts to conclude that a larger population could be fed if people switched to other types of food than meat.

Food Will Soon Be Too Expensive

Researchers have also revealed that a part of the looming food crisis includes a skyrocket in the prices of food. There is an estimate of at least 130 to 180 percent of increase in prices in food such as corn, grains, bread, and others by the time the year 2030 comes (that’s alarmingly eight years from now!)

Too Much Food is Wasted

About one-third of food that is produced globally that reaches the consumers before and after is wasted or lost, and that amounts to roughly 1.3 billion tons of food every year. This amounts to one of the leading factors as to why there might be a serious global food crisis sooner than people think.

The rapid growth in population and the lack of supply to meet the demand, as well as other economic factors are among the top reasons as to why the world may not be able to feed its inhabitants. Some experts believe it’s coming sooner and faster than climate change.
